How to Bet on the NFL

How does one Bet on the NFL football when it’s such a physical game? Well that a good question but in reality, it’s the most popular sport in America and more people bet on the NFL than any other sport in the United States.

So let’s take a look at the various types of NFL bets that are offered at the online sports betting parlors and sites around the world. There are Points Spreads, Money Lines, Totals, Parlay & Teasers Half-Times and Futures.  Check out this sports betting glossary to learn more about different types of betting.

The Point Spread is the favorite way of betting on the NFL because like many sports that the teams score a lot of points, the betting is determined from the point spread. The point spread/line is a side bet in nature that evens the chance of winning the bet. When a line is posted for a team, it is accompanies with the – or the + sign which indicated the games underdog or favorite.

Here’s an example of the point spread:

Teams –                           Game Time Spread –                 Final Score
Denver Broncos              -9 (-110)                                            23
KC Chiefs                           +9 (-110)                                            20

Under normal circumstances the number next to the point spread is at (-110) and that is generally called the odds, vig or juice. Which is the fraction of the wager received, if the bet wins? In this case, the winning bet with Denver for $110 won $100. In the example even as Denver win the game, the Chiefs did cover the spread as they lost the game but covered the spread as they lost the game by less than the 9 point spread, and that’s an important part of sports betting, and that is to get the pest point spread/line by looking around.

Another popular NFL bet is the Money Line that can be a winner if one bets on the underdog, and is driven by the phrase “on any given Sunday.” The Money Line Bet is placed on either the Underdog or the Favorite to win straight out.

An example is from a recent NFL Season:

N. E. Patriots -500 Dallas Cowboys + 350.

In this case to win $100 on the Patriots you must bet $500, where a $100 bet on the Cowboys returns $350. In cases similar bettors, due to the high risk, may choose to risk betting a smaller amount on the Patriot’s, called fading, as many do. In this particular case the Patriots won the game as did the faders.

Most sports betting generally are on the final score of each game, but in the NFL and NBA for example, they offer in most games, Spreads/Lines for betting on the First (1st) Quarter and First (1st) Half also. The Quarter Point Spread/Line is for betting on who will be winning at the end of the 1st quarter. The 2nd half bet is similar, but the bet ends when the 1st 2 quarters of the game are finished. Normally the 1st half spread/line is 50% of the overall spread/line projected for the Game.

Then there are the Point Spread/Lines for the Halftimes. Theses bets are considered as in game bets that are completed during the Games halftime. Then the 2nd half point spread/line takes into account the score in the first half for determining how the balance of the game (2nd half) finishes. Here’s an example:

Team Halftime Score Halftime Spread Final
Denver Broncos 12 +3 (-110) 27
K.C. Chiefs 16 -3 (-110) 23

In the spreads/lines for half times, the game basically restarts for the 2nd half a 0 to 0, thus in this example the Chiefs are anticipated to beat the Broncos by 3 points for the 2nd half of that game. A Bet on the Broncos for the 2nd half of $110 would bring a back $100 as they beat the spread and won the game. Since the bets are placed at halftime, and that leave a short period of time, normally few bets are actually placed on halftimes compared to full game bets.

Then there are the Totals also called Over/Under. The method behind the madness in this bet is you bet on whether the Total score in the game will go over of under the score predicted by the odds makers, sportsbooks or betting sites. An example would be:

Team Total or O/U Final Score
Packers of Green Bay 43.5o (-105) 32
Steelers of Pittsburgh 43.5u (-115) 26

The example shows the combined score of that Game at 58, and with the line offered at a reduced vig/juice, a bet on the over 43.5 of just $105 would win $100.

Certainly many players like Parlay and Teasers. The Parlay bets are place in conjunction with the point spread/line, money line or totals to increase one’s winnings. You only win with a Parlay bet when all your select teams win their individual games. A Teaser like a Parlay, with the exception you get points in your favor to assist you bet to becoming a winner. An example for a teaser is if the posted line for a game was -12 and you take a 6 point teaser, then you new betting line -5. Remember this may reduce your risks but you still have to win each game in your teaser, and the odds certainly would be reduced for the win amount. A lot of sportsbooks and betting sites allow players to take up to 15 picks in a parlay and if all teams in the Parlay were at -110, the payout would be 16,306.94 to 1! Then here are some examples of teams and Parlay odds.

# Teams – Payoff   # Teams – Payoff   # Teams – Payoff     # Teams – Payoff
         2         2.64/1       3           6/1             4           12.28/1       5       24.35/16       47.41/1       7       91.42/1         8         175.44/1       9       335.85/110       642.08/1     11   1225.70/1       12       2342.79/1     13       4473.51/1

14     8541.25/1     15 16306.94/1

Last but not least are Future bet and they are what they sound like, a bet placed on an event that will take place in the future whether it be soon or in an extended time period. One can imaging on a yearly basis the most popular NFL future’s bet, is who will win this year’s SuperBowl.

Normally, the next years futures odds are posted a week after the finish of the present year’s SuperBowl. If you Bet on NFL at a Sportsbook, surely you know that futures are no just limited to a win in a big game, as there are various potential futures bets on an event from who will win an event to who will be the MVP in the game.

In these types of bets the minimum bet is $1, and the across the board would cost $3 since it consists of 3 separate bets.

The MEDIUM types of Horse bets are:

  • Exacta – where one has to pick the 1st two horses in the exact order.

You can get more knowledge about the horse betting by checking out this sports betting glossary where most gambling terms are defined.

Also, at the track one can bet at the self-service terminals throughout the Belmont racetrack, and if you care to, you can bet by phone, on your mobile device or online, but you need to sign up for a NYRA Rewards account at the service booths around our track facility.

Ok so you bet and got a winner, now what? Just take your ticket back to the payout windows to cash in! Your winning payout amount will be based on how much was bet on each horse in that race you bet on. The reason being, that betting on horse racing uses a pari-mutuel wagering system.

The odds can change solely on how bets are place. The odds “morning line” which are those odds displayed in the day’s program, are the expert analysis of what the odds are likely to be at race post time. While the track extracts a % of all bets made, the racetrack has absolutely no interest in who win the race. The “takeout” funds the state, organization, and racing itself.

Unlike other forms of betting where “the house always wins,” we’re thrilled when you win! Please take note that NYRA can only pay off on winning wagers in accordance with the relevant complete betting rules of the New York State Gaming Commission (NYSGC) codified at 9(e) NYCRR.

The Basic Idea on How to Bet on Sports

The numbers in sports betting can be confusing, but don’t allow that, and just learn the basic which we will preview here on the major sports and bet types. Auto Racing and betting on same has become very popular as of late and is still expanding.
Betting on AUTO RACING is very like betting on Golf, and that entails the basic wager which is to pick the winner of a golf match, or the winner of an Auto Race. In Auto Racing the books usually provide the odds on several (up to 20 and the field) drivers in the races and several various odds. They also have match ups that pairs of drivers are driving against each other with each having a betting line. The best finish in that case wins. Betting lines for Auto Racing are normally listed under NASCAR, Formula 1 or other open wheeled events.
In BASEBALL you simply ask for the number of the team and place a bet with the amount you desire to bet. Odds on Baseball are 1st given on the Money Line, then the Over/under for the game, and the run line which varies as to who’s the favorite normally being a -1 ½ on the favorite a + 1 ½ on the underdog.

Also one can ask for action or listed pitcher, in which action does not pertain to who is pitching, whereby listed pitchers means if you take that option with pitcher versus team, or team versus the named pitcher, those pitchers must start the game or you have no action or no bet. One can choose to bet on the Money line, totals or run line. Normally all books have rules regarding the various types of bets in all sports, so be sure and check their rules before wagering.
When wagering on BASKETBALL you can bet on the point line, the totals and/ or the Money line. The point spread is a line with the odds that are given to and to win your team must cover or win by a predetermined point margin. Bet aware that point spreads and all odds on wagering change from the time 1st posted until the game actually begins.
Remember that in all sports betting there are various types of wagers that we will preview in other articles like straight wagers, parlays, teasers, round robins, reverses and if-bets. Here in this preview we present the basics for the most favorite sports in sports betting.
In betting on BOXING the normal bet is telling the book who you wish to bet on and the amount and they will tell you the line which is a Money Line , here again the favorite is always a minus (–) and the underdog is a plus (+).
If you care to Bet on FOOTBALL you can make a straight bet which is the more common type of football betting with the point spread, and the bet is to cover the spread, and the team have to win by the points allotted to each team by the odds makers. Remember the points in a game are constantly changing which is determined by the amounts of money that are bet on a particular team or their opponent.
Then you have the over/under or totals bet and one bets whether the total points scored in a game will be over or under that total listed for the team or teams. Then there is the Money line bet which allows one to select their choice regardless of the point spread and a minus (-) indicates the favorite and the plus (+) indicates the underdog in the game.
The sports of basketball and football primarily have teaser bets, which allow the bettor to add an allotted number of points to the point spread with reduced odds. Teasing is accomplished by adding the allotted points to the underdog or subtracting the same amount of allotted points from the favorite. The points allotted in Teasers can vary from sportbook to sportbook.
Betting on GOLF is a fast growing wagering sport and is much like Auto racing in that you need to pick a winner of the tournament of the 30 plus golfers plus the field with several options and different odds, and then they also normally offer matchups, which are similar to match-ups in Auto racing.
In betting on HOCKEY there are several options which is the famed money line, the goal line and the totals. The Money Line is the same in all sports normally, as is the totals-over/under as well as the Goal Line which is similar to the run line in baseball.
Betting on HORSE RACING is a book of its own and in another review we will detail all the various types of wagers for horses. The basic bets are bets to win, place (2nd) or show (meaning 3rd place). Remember all sportsbook cover a large variety of national and international race tracks so it’s important to know the track were the horse is running you car to bet on.
For those of you whom Bet on Sports at an Online sportbook be aware that there are also Future Bets and Proposition Bets that will be reviewed in another article summarizes all the various types, and title bets in the marketplace.
